The fourth generation Corvette was a radical departure from General Motors early Corvette engineering. It eliminated a perimeter frame to support the suspension and driveline. Two front frame rails integrated into the first ever Corvette uni-body construction. This made for an interesting driveline mounting installation. The front suspension subframe was bolted to the frame rails while providing engine mounting points. Based on where springs are located on a car - i.e., between the wheels and the frame - engineers often find it convenient to talk about the sprung mass and the unsprung mass. Overload shocks are surrounded by a coil spring to increase the carrying capacity of the suspension, while air-assist shocks have adjustable air bladders that act as a spring when carrying extra weight.

This is mounted on the top rear of the carrier cover, and the tie-rod ends are attached to the spindle knuckle. A "pickle fork" or ball joint separator tool makes this step a lot easier - Ed. A tube or pipe is used to clear the pivot shaft as the assembly is pressed into the lower control arm.

Before the differential can be removed, the 21mm long bolts placed vertically in the front of the differential must be removed. Put the ball joint in the strut, and tighten the locking nut. The bolts and distance tubes must be removed from the trunnion before unscrewing the swivel link from the swivel pin. Once the vehicle is raised, and the wheel, brake caliper, brake caliper mount, brake rotor, and any other obstacles are removed, a safety chain is placed through the coil spring, and lower control arm, ensuring the spring can not take flight if stress is relieved suddenly.

Fortunately, all of the components removed were still with the vehicle, so we were spared scrounging for missing parts. Coil springs can do a lot of damage if they pop out of the control arm. Now the upper control arms can be removed with an 18mm deep socket. Remove brake backing plate and steering arm from steering knuckle.
